How to evolve a weapon

Updated · Evolutions

Quick answer

Get the weapon to its max level, hold the passive item its recipe needs (players report level 1 is enough), then open a weapon chest — the ones dropped by elites and bosses. The chest evolves the weapon instead of giving a normal item. If nothing happens, the weapon isn't maxed, the passive isn't in your build, or that weapon has no evolution yet (several didn't in the demo).

The checklist

  1. Max the weapon. Keep picking its upgrade until the level-up menu stops offering it.
  2. Have the right passive. See the evolutions list for which passive each weapon needs. Any level works, per player reports.
  3. Open a chest. Elites and bosses drop weapon chests. With both conditions met, the chest triggers the evolution.

Why it isn’t working

Squad weapons

If your character’s keywords don’t allow a weapon, a follower appears and uses it for you (the Squad system). Followers’ weapons can still be levelled and evolved — the Apr 9 post describes evolving Power Fists to bring Marneus Calgar into your squad.

FAQ

Do I need the passive at max level?

No, according to Steam forum players — level 1 of the passive is enough. Only the weapon must be maxed.

Where do chests come from?

Tougher enemies and bosses drop them. The July community update admits some demo chests spawned out of reach; Auroch says that's fixed for the full game.

Can every weapon evolve?

Not in the demo — players couldn't evolve the D6 Dice, Power Fists or Grandblade there. The full game's 75+ weapons should fill those gaps.

Does the evolution replace the base weapon?

Yes, the evolved weapon takes the base weapon's slot and keeps the passive in your build.
